EQUALITY, DIVERSITY and INCLUSION POLICY

Easingwold Town Band CIO (‘the Band’) is committed to encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion among its members, and to eliminating unlawful discrimination.

The aim is for the Band’s membership to be truly representative of all sections of society and for each member to feel respected and able to give their best.

In providing services and/or facilities, the Band is also committed not to discriminate unlawfully against its clients or the public.

This policy’s purpose is:

1)  to provide equality, fairness and respect for all the Band’s members.

2)  to avoid unlawful discrimination in respect of protected characteristics as set out in the Equality Act 2010, viz.:

  • age
  • disability
  • gender reassignment
  • marriage and civil partnership
  • pregnancy and maternity
  • race (including colour, nationality, and ethnic or national origin)
  • religion or belief
  • sex
  • sexual orientation

3)  to oppose and avoid all forms of unlawful discrimination in:

  • dealing with grievances and discipline
  • terminating membership
  • selection for advancement, training or other opportunities for personal development.

The Band commits to:

1)  encouraging equality, diversity and inclusion in its activities, as matters of good practice.

2)  creating an environment free of bullying, harassment, victimisation and unlawful discrimination;  promoting dignity and respect for all, in which individual differences and the contributions of all members are recognised and valued.   Band members should understand that they can be held responsible, in the course of Band activities, for acts of bullying, harassment, victimisation and unlawful discrimination against fellow Band members, clients and the public.

3)  taking seriously complaints of bullying, harassment, victimisation or unlawful discrimination on the part of a Band member, made by other Band members, clients or members of the public in the course of the Band’s activities.  Such acts will be dealt with as misconduct by the Band’s executive committee and appropriate action will be taken. Particularly serious complaints could amount to gross misconduct and lead to termination of membership (ref. Section 9.4 of the Band’s constitution).  Sexual harassment, including allegations of sexual assault, may amount to both an infringement of this policy and a criminal matter, and may be referred to the Police.  Harassment under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997 is not limited to circumstances where it relates to a protected characteristic, and is also a criminal offence.

4)  making opportunities for training, development and progress available to all its members, helping and encouraging them to develop their full potential.

5)  reviewing its policies, procedures and membership rules periodically and updating them when necessary
